What to Look for When Hiring a Senior Home Care Company

Choosing the Right Care Is One of the Most Important Decisions You’ll Make

When it comes to in-home care for a senior you love, not all companies are the same. The right fit means more than a clean background check and a professional website.

It means finding a team that will truly show up - not just physically, but with the kind of attention and care that makes a real difference in someone’s life.

Here’s what to look for when evaluating senior home care and senior service companies - and one story that shows what genuine care actually looks like.

1. They Keep Family in the Loop

When your parent is being cared for by someone else, you want to know what’s happening.

A good home care and service company doesn’t just check tasks off a list - they communicate with family members in a meaningful way, so you always feel connected to your loved one’s wellbeing even when you can’t be there.

One of our clients, Doreen, had been dealing with a painful bump on her foot that had been bothering her for some time. Tessa, her caregiver and service parter at Sunny Senior Services, noticed that Doreen was uncomfortable and reached out right away to Doreen’s daughter, Anne, to let her know.

Then Tessa took Doreen to the pharmacy to get it looked at. The pharmacist provided a special bandage and instructions for how to treat the bump - and Doreen got the relief she needed.

That’s the kind of communication that matters.

Anne didn’t have to find out about her mother’s foot pain weeks later. She heard from Tessa right away, and she knew it was being handled with care.

2. They Notice the Things That Get Overlooked

A great caregiver doesn’t just complete their task list and leave. They pay attention. They notice when something seems off - a change in mood, a new ache, a missed meal, food thats gone off in the fridge - and they act on it.

When hiring a care and service company, ask how their team handles situations that fall outside the scheduled tasks. Do they feel empowered to speak up? Do they follow through?

3. They Treat Your Parent with Dignity

The best caregivers understand that their clients are whole people with histories, preferences, and opinions.

They don’t talk down to seniors. They ask before they do. They adapt to the senior’s routine rather than imposing their own.

Pay attention in initial meetings to how the company and its caregivers speak about the people they serve.

4. They Have Consistency

Seniors thrive on routine and familiarity. A company that sends a different caregiver every week makes it hard for trust and comfort to develop. Ask about their approach to caregiver consistency and what happens when a regular caregiver is unavailable.

5. They’re Easy to Reach

When something comes up - and it will - you need to be able to reach someone quickly.

Ask how the company communicates with families, how concerns are handled, and who you call in an urgent situation. A company that is hard to reach during the sales process will likely be hard to reach when it matters most.

6. They Come Recommended

Ask the company for references. Talk to other families who have used their services. Read reviews with a critical eye - not just for the star rating, but for the stories people share. What does genuine care look like in their experience?

The Standard We Hold Ourselves To

At Sunny Senior Services, family communication isn’t a policy - it’s a value!

We are on a mission to help seniors stay independent AND help families find peace of mind.

We believe the people who love your senior deserve to feel like they’re still there, even when they can’t be. That means our caregivers speak up when something seems off, keep families informed, and go the extra step - like Tessa did for Doreen - because that’s what genuine care looks like.

We provide non-medical in-home senior care in Vancouver, Calgary, and Abbotsford. If you’re looking for a team you can trust, we’d love to connect. Visit sunnyseniorservices.ca to get started or call 604-500-1153.
