Calgary's Home Services for Seniors Program Is Ending - Here's What You Need to Know

What Was the Home Services for Seniors Program?

The City of Calgary’s Home Services for Seniors program provided three core services to eligible seniors: snow shoveling, grass cutting, and light housekeeping.


There was no direct cost to clients - the program was funded through Alberta’s Special Needs Assistance (SNA) for Seniors program, which covered costs on the client’s behalf.

To qualify, seniors needed to be 65 or older, live in Calgary, and be eligible for the provincial SNA program. The services were specifically designed for seniors who face challenges with mobility, lifting, and other physical activities - the everyday tasks that become harder with age but are essential to maintaining a safe, clean, and livable home.

What Did the Home Services for Seniors Program Cover?

Snow shoveling: City sidewalks, pathways, the path to the front door, driveways, and wheelchair ramps, following any snowfall of 2 cm or more.

Grass cutting: Front and back lawns every two weeks from May to September. Housekeeping: Dusting, vacuuming, mopping, kitchen cleaning, and bathroom cleaning for two hours every three weeks.

Why the Home Services for Seniors Program Ending?

The City of Calgary has confirmed that the Home Services for Seniors program will end on September 30, 2026, and has stopped accepting new clients. While the City has not publicly detailed all the reasons behind the decision, it is consistent with broader budget pressures that municipalities across Canada have been navigating in recent years.

Whatever the reasons, the impact on vulnerable seniors is real. For many, this program was not a luxury - it was the practical support that made it possible to stay home safely. Without it, the risk of social isolation, unsafe living conditions, and preventable falls increases.

Who Is Most Affected?

The seniors most affected are those who relied on the program’s three services as a core part of staying at home independently. In practical terms, that means seniors who cannot safely shovel their own driveway after a winter snowfall (a genuine safety hazard in Calgary’s climate), seniors who can no longer manage a lawnmower or gardening tasks, and seniors living alone who needed regular housekeeping support to keep their home clean and livable.

The good news is that seniors who were eligible for the City program through Alberta’s SNA program may still be able to access provincial funding to help pay for private home support services. We strongly recommend contacting the Alberta Supports Contact Centre at 1-877-644-9992 to understand what SNA benefits you may still be entitled to, and how they can be applied toward privately arranged services.


Other Programs Worth Exploring

The Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program (SHARP) offers low-interest loans to help seniors modify and repair their homes to support independent living. The Residential Access Modification Program (RAMP) provides grants to help with accessibility modifications such as ramps and grab bars.
