Financial Help for Seniors in Alberta: Subsidy Programs You May Not Know About
Help Is Available - But You Have to Know Where to Look
Many seniors in Alberta are living on fixed incomes, and the cost of getting a little extra help at home can feel out of reach. What most people don’t realize is that there are several government programs designed to help cover exactly those costs - from housekeeping and home support to monthly financial supplements.
If you or a senior you love is in Alberta and managing on a low income, here are three programs worth looking into.
1. Special Needs Assistance (SNA) for Seniors
This provincial grant provides up to $5,872 per year to help low-income seniors cover the cost of home support services, including housekeeping. It’s a claim-based program, meaning the senior arranges the service themselves and then applies for reimbursement from the government.
If a senior already qualifies for the Alberta Seniors Benefit (see below), they will likely qualify for SNA as well. This is one of the most direct ways to get financial support for in-home care costs.
2. Alberta Seniors Benefit (ASB)
The Alberta Seniors Benefit provides a monthly financial assistance payment of up to $329 per month for single seniors who receive Old Age Security (OAS) and meet the income threshold. The good news is that if a senior already receives the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), no additional application is needed — the province calculates eligibility automatically.
This monthly top-up can make a meaningful difference in a senior’s ability to afford everyday needs, including help at home.

3. Seniors Services Home Maintenance (SSHM) — City of Calgary
This City of Calgary program has provided subsidized light housekeeping, snow removal, and grass cutting to eligible low-income seniors. However, please note that this program is ending September 30, 2026 and is no longer accepting new clients.
If you were hoping to use this program, the Special Needs Assistance (SNA) for Seniors listed above is the best alternative path for accessing support.
