What many families don’t realize is that there are provincial and local programs specifically designed to reduce those costs — from subsidized home support to monthly rent and income assistance.
If you or a senior you love is living in Abbotsford, here are three programs worth looking into.
1. BC Home Support Program - Fraser Health
Abbotsford falls within the Fraser Health region, which administers BC’s Home Support Program locally. This program provides subsidized personal care and daily assistance for seniors who need help with things like bathing, grooming, meal preparation, and light housekeeping.
The program is income-based — seniors with lower incomes pay less, and some may qualify for services at minimal or no cost. To access the program, a senior or family member can contact Fraser Health directly to request a home assessment. Filing an annual income tax return is required to determine the contribution amount.
2. SAFER - Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters
SAFER is a BC Housing program available to seniors throughout the province, including Abbotsford. It provides monthly rent subsidies to help low- and moderate-income seniors afford housing in the private rental market.
To qualify, seniors must be 60 or older, have lived in BC for the past 12 months, have a gross household income under $40,000 per year, and be spending more than 30% of their gross monthly income on rent. The average monthly subsidy is approximately $337, and recent provincial investments have expanded the program’s reach.
3. BC Senior’s Supplement
The BC Senior’s Supplement is a monthly provincial payment that tops up the federal income support seniors already receive. If a senior qualifies for the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), they are automatically enrolled in the BC Senior’s Supplement - no separate application is required.
This monthly supplement provides extra income that can go toward everyday needs, including in-home support. If a senior in Abbotsford is receiving GIS but hasn’t heard about the BC Supplement, it’s worth a quick check to confirm they’re receiving everything they’re entitled to.
