Grocery Shopping & Cooking up Smiles with Janet

Person prepares a baked chicken with potatoes on a kitchen counter. A small, snowy tree decorates the wooden surface, creating a cozy mood.

Janet, 78, has always been the heart of her kitchen. A lifelong Vancouverite with a quick wit and a love for hosting, her home has decades of memories built around shared meals. However, as dementia began to progress, the kitchen she loved started to feel like a confusing place.

Suddenly, her cherished routines were complicated: recipes she knew by heart became difficult to follow, leading to forgotten ingredients or over-salted dishes. Grocery shopping became a source of stress as she struggled to manage her lists and the physical weight of the bags. Her family worried about her safety near the stove, and Janet felt the frustration of her favourite meals not tasting quite the way they used to.

The Sunny Solution:

Janet enrolled in our Household & Errands service, which focuses on providing a supportive "sous-chef" to help her maintain her culinary independence. Every week, Robyn, arrives to help Janet bridge the gap between her love for cooking and the challenges of memory loss.

The partnership starts with a collaborative shopping trip, where Robyn manages the heavy lifting and ensures the pantry is stocked with exactly what Janet needs. Back at home, they step into the kitchen together. While Robyn provides the gentle reminders and safety oversight needed for timing and measurements, Janet remains the head chef. This arrangement is flexible - some days they focus on prepping old family favourites, while other days are spent swapping jokes and stories about what Vancouver was like in the 1960s.

The Result: Life, Uninterrupted

“I’m still the cook in this house," Janet says with a laugh. "I just have a partner to help me remember where I put the salt! I get to keep making my favourite recipes, and I’ve even taught Robyn a few tricks along the way.”

When Robyn recently asked her what her favourite thing to make was, Janet didn't hesitate: "I like to make people smile." Thanks to this support, she is doing exactly that - sharing joy, one home-cooked meal at a time.
