How a Daily Morning Check-In Call Helps Patricia Never Miss Her Medication

Patricia is 79 years old and lives independently in Calgary. Her son had started to notice something that worried him: her medication wasn't being managed consistently.

Some days she would forget to take her morning pills entirely. Other days, she would take them, forget she had taken them, and take them again.

For most people, a missed dose or an accidental double dose is an inconvenience. For a senior on blood pressure and heart medication, it can be genuinely dangerous.

Patricia wasn't careless. She simply had mornings when her memory didn't cooperate. And without someone to check in, those mornings were going unnoticed.

Why Medication Consistency Matters So Much for Seniors

Medication errors are among the most common and most preventable causes of health complications in older adults. Many seniors manage multiple prescriptions with different schedules, and keeping track of all of them - especially on days when memory is foggy or routines are disrupted - is genuinely difficult. The consequences of getting it wrong can range from mild discomfort to serious medical events.

This is one of the most important things families across Vancouver, Calgary, and Abbotsford ask us to help with - and while we are not a medical service, our wellness check-ins are a simple, effective way to build a daily safety net.

What We Did for Patricia

Every morning at 9:00 a.m., she receives a phone call from her Sunny Senior Services caregiver. The call lasts about five minutes. We ask how she slept, how she is feeling, what she's up to for the day and whether she has taken her morning medication.

If she is not sure, we talk her through checking the pill organizer her son set up. The call ends with a quick chat - something to look forward to, not just a checkbox.

Since starting the daily check-in, Patricia has not missed a dose. Her son receives a brief update if anything seems off. Her doctor has noticed the improvement in her health markers. And Patricia, for her part, says she likes starting her morning with a friendly voice.

What Senior Wellness Check-Ins Include

Our wellness check-ins are non-medical, which means we are not nurses or pharmacists - but we are consistent, caring, and attentive. A typical wellness check-in can include a daily phone call or in-person visit, a friendly conversation to assess how the client is feeling, a prompt to check if medication has been taken, noting any changes in mood, behaviour, or physical wellbeing to share with family, and a warm, human connection that breaks up the day.
