What Is the Special Needs Assistance Program for Seniors - and How Can It Help Pay for Home Care?

There’s a Provincial Grant That Can Help Cover the Cost of In-Home Support

One of the biggest barriers families face when looking into home care for a senior in Alberta is the cost. Professional in-home support is meaningful and valuable - but for seniors living on a fixed income, affording regular visits from a caregiver can feel out of reach.

What many Alberta families don’t know is that there is a provincial grant specifically designed to help with exactly this. It’s called the Special Needs Assistance (SNA) for Seniors program, and it can provide eligible seniors with up to $5,872 per year to cover the cost of home support services, including housekeeping.

What Is the SNA Program?

The Special Needs Assistance for Seniors program is administered by the Government of Alberta. It provides financial support to low-income seniors who need help with day-to-day tasks at home - things like housekeeping, laundry, and light domestic tasks that help them continue living safely and independently.

The program provides up to $5,872 per year, paid as a reimbursement. That means the senior arranges the service themselves - through a company like Sunny Senior Services - and then submits receipts to the government for reimbursement. It is not a voucher or prepaid benefit; the senior pays for the service and is reimbursed after the fact.

Who Qualifies?

To be eligible for the SNA program, a senior generally needs to be 65 or older, be a resident of Alberta, and meet the income thresholds for low-income senior support. If a senior already qualifies for the Alberta Seniors Benefit or the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), they will very likely qualify for SNA as well.

The best way to confirm eligibility is to contact Alberta Supports at 1-877-644-9992 or visit alberta.ca/seniors-special-needs-assistance.

When you book services with Sunny Senior Services, we provide clear receipts for every visit. Those receipts are what a senior submits to the government to claim their SNA reimbursement. We make the process as simple as possible so that families can focus on what matters - not paperwork.

A Real Example of What $5,872 Can Cover

To put that number in perspective: $5,872 per year works out to roughly $490 per month. For many seniors, that covers support services for 3 hours per week - enough to keep the home clean, the laundry done, and a trusted face coming through the door regularly.

That regular presence is often what makes the difference between a senior feeling isolated and a senior feeling supported.

Don’t Leave This Money Behind

The SNA program exists because the Alberta government recognizes that aging at home - in familiar surroundings, with independence and dignity - is what most seniors want, and that low-income seniors deserve support to make it possible. But the program only works if seniors and their families know it exists and take the steps to apply.
