Financial Help for Seniors in Vancouver: Subsidy Programs You May Not Know About
Help Is Available - But You Have to Know Where to Look
Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities in Canada, and for seniors living on a fixed income, the cost of getting extra help at home can feel out of reach. The good news is that there are several provincial and city programs specifically designed to help low-income seniors cover those costs.
If you or a senior you love is living in Vancouver, here are three programs worth looking into.
1. BC Home Support Program (Subsidized Home Care)
The BC Home Support Program provides subsidized personal care and daily assistance for seniors through Vancouver Coastal Health. Services can include help with bathing, grooming, meal preparation, and light household tasks.
The program is income-based, meaning the amount a senior contributes toward the cost is determined by their income - and for low-income seniors, services can be very affordable.
To access the program, a senior or their family member can request a home assessment through Vancouver Coastal Health. An annual income tax return must be filed to determine eligibility.
2. SAFER — Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters
SAFER is a BC Housing program that provides monthly rent subsidies to help low- and moderate-income seniors afford rent in the private market. With Vancouver’s high rental costs, this program can make a significant difference.
To qualify, seniors must be 60 or older, have lived in BC for the past 12 months, have a gross household income under $40,000 per year, and be spending more than 30% of their gross monthly income on rent. The average monthly subsidy is approximately $337.
3. BC Senior’s Supplement
The BC Senior’s Supplement is a monthly provincial payment that tops up the federal income support seniors already receive. Seniors who are approved for the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) are automatically enrolled - no separate application is needed.
This supplement provides additional monthly income that can go toward everyday needs, including in-home support. If a senior is receiving GIS and hasn’t been receiving the BC Senior’s Supplement, it’s worth contacting the provincial government to confirm enrolment.
